Control center and 19 traction converter substations for power supply of Lviv city electric transport network

Works performed

Turnkey project in conditions of active power supply facilities without interruption of power supply of city electric transport network infrastructure.

  • design;
  • equipment manufacturing and supply;
  • building, installation, commissioning works;
  • customization and implementation of Automated system for electric power consumption accounting (ASEPCA);
  • installation of Security alarm system (SAS) and Fire alarm system;
  • training.

Supply of modern equipment, manufactured by PLUTON, allowed increasing of rolling stock power supply reliability, significantly increasing of modernized equipment lifetime, as well as reducing of Customers’ expenses by 20%.

Modernization project, financed with the support of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), was completed in full by PLUTON in 2016 and included:

  • complete and partial modernization of medium voltage switchgear 6 kV and DC switchgear 600 V;
  • modernization of auxiliaries equipment;
  • modernization of substations and operator control center remote control system (including implementation of SCADA system);
  • implementation of Automated system for electric power consumption accounting (ASEPCA);
  • installation of Security alarm system (SAS) and Fire alarm system (FAS).

PLUTON modern solutions for outdated traction substations modernization involve partial and complete equipment (or main single components) replacement on existing substations for a more up-to-date one. It allows increasing of energy performance and rising traction substations equipment in whole onto a totally new control, diagnostics and monitoring level. Modern microprocessor protection and automatics devices with industrial communication interfaces were applied, and additional contact network protections against emergency currents impact were implemented as part of the project.

As the result of modernization service life rate of substations main components, as well as equipment reliability and maintainability was improved, its functions were updated and extended, brought into conformity with modern operating safety requirements. Due to equipment modernization, flow and mean time to failure parameters, as well as duration and periodicity of scheduled, capital and routine repairs were reduced, indicators of labor costs on equipment maintenance were significantly improved.

As part of the modernization project, traction substations were equipped with modern remote control systems whereby prompt response level significantly improved, it has become possible to continuously monitor power system key indicators state, as well as to remotely control electrical network circuit in normal, emergency and post-emergency modes. High-speed operation, control safety and reliability indicators were improved, high failure safety of the system and redundancy of critical components was provided, as well as maintenance costs were significantly reduced.

Also, as part of technical reequipment, modern remote control system on the basis of industrial SCADA system, was implemented on the basis of running operator control center. This significantly reduced response time on emergency situations in city electric transport power supply, as well as optimized the number of maintenance staff.
